Find the Planet and Where Are You?

Estelar Online’s quizzes use the game’s real universe: catalog stars, known exoplanets and the Solar System. In Find the Planet you get clues about a star and have to fly to it; in Where Are You? the game puts you in front of a planet, or lands you at a site with no names, and you guess where you are. Both are solo, have 5 rounds and are picked on the MATCHES screen ([J] by default).

Each round picks a star between 1.5 and 8 light-years from where you are (the first two rounds stay within 4 light-years) and shows five clues:

  • the star’s class;
  • its distance from you;
  • its distance from the Sun;
  • how many known planets it has;
  • whether it’s visible to the naked eye from Earth (with its magnitude).

You have 90 seconds to find the star on the star map ([M] by default) and reach it with warp. This quiz is played in the real universe, with your own ship and your own fuel. The chosen star is always one the map lists, so you can find it.

Result Points
Reached the star 500 + 5 per second left
Time ran out up to 250, proportional to how close you got

Hints: they cost points and come in order: the direction in sectors from where you are (50), the exact sector (100) and the star’s name (200). The cost comes out of the points you’ve already made or the next ones.

Getting all 5 rounds right gives the Perfect Navigator badge. If there are no stars within the distance range, change systems and try again.

This quiz has three variants, all with systems within 25 light-years of the Sun:

Variant How it works Time per round
4 options You appear in orbit around a planet and choose between four “planet · system” answers 45 s
Surface You’re landed at a real site, with no names on screen, and mark the system on the guess map 60 s
Sol only Landed at a site in the Solar System, you mark which planet it is 60 s

On the surface, it pays to look around: the color of the sky, the number of suns and moons, the ground and the gravity tell you a lot. The world sheet and what you already know about each planet help you recognize it.

Result Points
Exact answer 250 + 3 per second left
Wrong guess (surface) up to 250, dropping with the distance in light-years between the guess and the right system
Wrong guess (Sol only) up to 250, dropping with the difference between the two planets’ orbits
Wrong in 4 options 0

The quizzes pay 1 ¢ for every 5 points scored. Even if you leave midway, whatever you’ve already scored counts. Outside private rooms, they also give 1 to 3 components and a 10% chance of a blueprint, and each leaderboard (Find the Planet and each Where Are You? variant) keeps the top 20; the record adds +400 ¢.
