Garages and auctions

You can own several ships, but you fly one at a time. The others are stored in garages spread across the stations, and each slot has a weekly rent in credits. To switch ships, you have to go to the station where the ship is stored.

Your first ship doesn’t need a garage: it’s always with you. Garages only come into play when you want a second ship.

Everything to do with your fleet is in the station’s SHIPYARD tab (dock and open the tab). It has four parts:

Part What it shows
YOUR FLEET All your ships, with class, state, where they are and each one’s kills
GARAGES The slots you rent, how long they’re paid for and whether rent is late
SHIPS FOR SALE The ship classes you can buy with credits
STELLAR AUTHORITY AUCTIONS Ships auctioned at this station (only shows up when there are any)

The war license is there too; see War license.

Under GARAGES › Rent a slot here you rent a slot at the station you’re docked at. Each slot holds one ship. The first week is paid up front; you can rent several slots at the same station and have garages at different stations.

The price is per slot, per week, and depends on where the station is: it’s more expensive near the Sun and cheaper on the frontier. The game works it out like this: 600 ¢ divided by (1 + 5% per light-year of distance from the Sun), rounded to the nearest ten.

Distance from the Sun Rent per slot
In the Solar System 600 ¢ per week
20 light-years 300 ¢ per week
60 light-years 150 ¢ per week

The price is locked in when you first rent at that station and applies to any slots you add there later.

If you already have an active ship, you can only buy another if there’s a free slot at the same station: your current ship goes into that slot, and the new one leaves the shipyard as your active ship. Without a slot, the BUY button is blocked with the warning “Rent a slot here to store your current ship”.

The new ship comes with a full tank, an intact hull and an empty hold.

In the YOUR FLEET list, a ship stored at this station shows the USE THIS ONE button. When you use it, the two swap places: the active one takes the slot and the stored one flies with you. A ship stored at another station can’t be called in from afar; the game tells you where it is.

Each ship keeps its own stuff. When it goes into the garage, it takes along:

  • its hold with everything that was in it;
  • the fuel in its tank;
  • its hull and damage.

When you use it again, it’s exactly as you left it. Your backpack and your equipment, on the other hand, belong to the pilot and go with you from ship to ship.

You can also rename any ship in your fleet (2 to 24 characters) right in the SHIPYARD.

State What it means
ACTIVE The ship you’re flying
STORED In a garage slot, ready to use
IMPOUNDED Held in the garage over late rent: it can’t be used until you pay
DESTROYED Lost in PvP; it stays in your fleet as history (by whom and where)
AUCTIONED Went to auction over late rent; it stays in your fleet as history

Destroyed and auctioned ships also show up in the SHIPS tab of the pilot’s public page.

Billing is automatic: every week that comes due, the rent comes out of your credits. Billing happens while you’re in the game (when you log in and every so often). If you don’t have enough credits:

  1. The debt starts growing, week by week.
  2. The ships in that garage become IMPOUNDED.
  3. The game warns you at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days late, always saying how many days are left until the auction.
  4. At 30 days late, the impounded ships go to auction and the garage is given back.

To get out of it, open the SHIPYARD and use PAY on the late garage. With the debt paid off, the ships go back to being stored. While a garage is late, you can’t rent more slots in it.

An auctioned ship becomes a listing by the Stellar Authority at the station where it was, in the STELLAR AUTHORITY AUCTIONS section of the SHIPYARD. The auction lasts 7 days.

  • Minimum bid: the higher of the debt (split across the auctioned ships) and 40% of the class’s shipyard price.
  • Buying it: any pilot docked at that station can buy it for the minimum bid with BUY. Just like a purchase, if you already have an active ship you need a free slot there.
  • The ship comes empty: the old owner’s hold doesn’t go with it.
  • The surplus goes to the owner: the money pays off the debt and anything above it goes to the old owner the next time they log in.
  • No bids: after the 7 days, the ship stays with the Stellar Authority and the debt is closed.

Example: a Mining ship is impounded over rent of 600 ¢ a week. At 30 days, the debt is past 2,000 ¢, but 40% of the Mining ship’s price is far more than that, and that’s the minimum bid. Whoever buys it pays that amount; the old owner gets everything above the debt.

The Galactic Citizen gets up to 2 slots sponsored by the Stellar Authority: the first slots they rent pay no rent while their citizenship is active. If the citizenship expires, those slots start being billed normally.
