Surface

Every solid planet in Estelar Online has landing sites: areas of about 150 to 210 meters in radius where the ship lands and the pilot steps out on foot, in a suit. The ground is made of 1-meter blocks, which you break and place like in a building game. Gas giants have nowhere to land, and moons can only be scanned.

  1. Scan the planet ([F] with it as the target). Without that, landing won’t open.
  2. Press [L] by default. The ship warps to the site, approaches and lands on its own.
  3. If the planet has more than one site, pick one with keys 1 to 9. [L] again cancels.

To take off, walk to the ship (on the pad) and press [F].

Each solid planet has one or two sites. They come in three kinds: abandoned base (modules, an antenna and more containers), mining post (probes and more ore) and ruins (pillars, a monolith and more artifacts). Earth, the inhabited planet, always has two, and the first one is a base.

Default key Action
[W] / [S] Walk forward / backward
[A] / [D] Turn
[Q] / [E] Sidestep
[Shift] Run
[Space] Jump
[F] Collect, take off, interact with the flag
[N] Measure (science readings)

Dragging with the left button turns the camera; with the right, it turns the astronaut. The terrain is flat near the pad and rises into mountains at the edge of the site. Each site has its own gravity, sky color and atmosphere (with no atmosphere, the sky is black and full of stars). The local day lasts 24 minutes, with night, moons in the sky and meteor showers.

The site’s glowing items are collected with [F]. Once collected, an item comes back after 12 minutes.

Item What it gives
Ore deposit Ore matching the planet: water ice on icy worlds, nickel on volcanic ones and iron everywhere else; sometimes iridium.
Container Some credits, scrap and, sometimes, electronic components.
Artifact Once per pilot: 350 ¢ and the artifact as a unique item (with who found it, where and when), to keep, sell or take to a station museum.

What you collect goes into your backpack; when it’s full, into the hold of the landed ship. See Inventory and Credits.

The site is a block world, with bedrock at the bottom, stone, the planet’s surface layer (regolith, sand, ice or basalt) and veins of ore and crystal.

  • Aim: the block under the cursor, up to 5 meters away, gets an outline.
  • Break: hold the left button still. The block cracks until it breaks and goes into your backpack. An ore block turns into 0.2 t of the planet’s ore.
  • Place: a right click puts the block selected in the quick bar on the face you’re aiming at (held still, 4 per second).
  • Quick bar: the first 9 backpack slots, only with hand items (blocks, torches and tools). 1 to 9 or the mouse wheel pick the slot.

The area around the pad (the ship, the pad and the flag) can’t be edited. Changes are saved on the server, and every pilot who lands at the site sees what you built or dug.

The right tool is the best one you have in your inventory; you don’t need to hold it.

Tool Breaks Speed
Hand Regolith, sand, ice, glass, lamp and torch 1×
Pickaxe Also stone, ore, crystal, basalt, stone blocks and metal plate 3×
Plasma drill Everything the pickaxe breaks 8×

Bedrock doesn’t break. Gloves and other suit items can speed up mining; see Equipment.

Recipes ([R] by default, on foot) combine what you’ve collected, with no workbench: building is the activity itself.

The most common path: break ore to gather iron, make ingots, rods and a pickaxe; with it, break stone and crystal; with crystal, make the drill.

The torch is a glowing block, good for marking the way or lighting your base at night. It’s made from 1 rod and 1 raw crystal (the ore), 4 torches at a time, and goes in the quick bar like any block. The lamp also glows.

Next to each site’s pad is the flag spot. With [F] on it, you start colonizing the planet, contest another pilot’s colonization or check who the owner is. See Colonies.

With the colony complete, [G] (default) at the flag sets the site as your base: that’s where you respawn if your ship is destroyed. The most recent save point is what counts: if you later dock at a station or enter a kiosk, your respawn moves there, until you set your base again.
